A surprising number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have never checked their credit scores or that of their customers it has emerged in a new survey.

The study by Experian found that of the 698 SMEs they asked, 61 per cent of the respondents had never checked their credit score and 71 per cent had not checked the credit scores of their customers.

Despite the importance of credit scores to a company’s reputation and borrowing potential, 39 per cent didn’t know what one is, let alone the measures which can be taken to improve it.

Credit checking can be done for as little as £2 or even free in some cases, but can make a big difference to a business in the long term.

Simon Streat, managing director of Experian, said: “It is important for businesses to monitor their credit score on a regular basis to ensure it reflects their situation accurately, and to be able to take action to resolve any issues that are highlighted.”
