Boundaries between work and home life blurred in mobile working world

Social media is a useful indicator to show how the lines between private and work lives are becoming more blurred for some, as a new survey shows that seven out of ten employees have ‘friended’ their bosses on Facebook.

The Cisco Connected World Technology Report also found that of those who use microblogging site, Twitter, only 32 per cent keep it as a purely personal endeavour with 68 per cent following their manager or colleagues.

More than half of the respondents said they could not live without the internet, ranking its importance higher than cars, dating and even partying in terms of being integral to their lives.

Next week is National Work-Life Week, which aims to reflect the growing importance of a good work-life balance in the modern climate with flexible and mobile working made easier.

Marie Hattar, vice president of enterprise marketing at Cisco, said: “Without a doubt, our world is changing to be much more internet-focused, and becomes even more so with each new generation.”
