BE hosts City of London’s Aldgate Project Roadshow

BE’s Aldgate business centre is today welcoming representatives from City of London Corporation who will be running a roadshow in the reception area displaying plans for the new Aldgate Project.

The City, in partnership with London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH) and Transport for London (TfL), has for some time been looking to make alterations to the highway layout and urban realm of the Aldgate area.

Construction is scheduled to commence on 28 July 2014 with works phased across the project area, starting with the closure at the southern end of Minories as changes are made to the street to two-way working. All construction work is anticipated to be complete by autumn 2016.

New western public spaceAldgate Roadshow

A public exhibition of the Aldgate Project scheme and construction phases will be set up in the Minories foyer on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th July. City officers will be on hand during peak times of the day, including lunch time, to answer any questions.

Local workers and residents are also invited to a formal presentation about the scheme by Assistant Director City Transportation Iain Simmons and City officers on Tuesday 22nd July from 6.30pm – 7.30pm at the Artizan Street Library. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

Further details of visits to local businesses during the Aldgate Roadshow can be found on the Aldgate Project website under ‘Construction news’: http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/aldgatearea

Overview of works

The scheme will introduce two-way working on Aldgate High Street, St Botolph Street, a section of Middlesex Street and Minories. A permanent closure to motor vehicles is proposed on Middlesex Street at the junction with St Botolph Street. These changes will enable the creation of two new public spaces: the first between the Sir John Cass’s Foundation Primary School and the St Botolph without Aldgate Church; and the second at the junction of Middlesex Street and St Botolph Street. Pedestrian subways will be removed, with new surface level crossings introduced instead.
