Employees need to take responsibility for their own training

Employees need to take responsibility for their own workplace training if they are to get ahead in business, it has been claimed.

According to new research from recruitment specialist Hays, workers can’t just rely on business owners and managers to spoon-feed them with training modules – they need to be proactive about getting out of the office space and going on training courses.

Speaking to onrec.com, Charles Logan, director at Hays, said: “Employees also need to start taking ownership of their career. Many sectors are still experiencing skills shortages, with employers unable to fill key positions.

“To take advantage of these vacancies, jobseekers should invest in their future by developing skills that are needed by businesses.”

He added that being mentored by experts in their industry is a good means of finding out what skills are in demand and what training you would have to undertake to attain them.

Recently, researchers from Cardiff University claimed that office-based training should not be ignored during the current economic climate.
