Employees ‘not’ where they want to be in their careers

Employees working in services offices or other buildings feel like they are lagging behind their careers, according to new research.

The new survey from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) found that 42 per cent of respondents felt that they were not where they would like to be at this stage of their lives.

Most workers (22 per cent) felt that, especially over the last 12 months, they had not been given a pay rise or a promotion because their bosses simply didn’t have the funds available to do so.

Others admitted that the shortcomings stemmed from themselves, with 13 per cent acknowledging that they needed more experience and six per cent admitting that they needed to acquire more qualifications.

Narinder Uppal, director of the Awarding Body at CMI, said: “It’s clear that we all recognise the importance of professional qualifications in our career development – but at the same time, it’s disappointing that more people aren’t helping themselves.

“It’s too easy to blame others for your own lack of progress, but in a time of tighter budgets and increasing competitiveness in the job market, those people that are prepared to make an effort to improve their skills will be the ones that employers turn to first.”
