Milton Keynes Attracts International Businesses

Over the last year Milton Keynes has become the chosen destination for more international businesses than any other regional city outside of London.

According to a recent report by UK Trade and Investment body, in access of 3,000 jobs have been created or secured in Milton Keynes as a result of foreign companies investing in the city over the last year with 17 foreign businesses either relocating or being acquired by Milton Keynes-based companies.UKTI Logo

Commenting on the report, cabinet member for resources, efficiency and growth, Councillor Rob Middleton, said: “As international businesses increasingly make Milton Keynes their UK home, our reputation as the engine room of the regional economy comes ever stronger.

“Over the coming months, we are committed to ensuring that the benefits of new international investment are felt far and wide, through local well-paid jobs, and greater opportunities for our community of small businesses.”

The South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership was highly praised, and placed in the top 10 of 39 of the UK’s local enterprise partnerships, by the UKTI for its work in promoting prime growth location in the area for business, investors and visitors.

Head of corporate economic development and inward investment at InvestMK, Pam Gosal, commented: “With enviable statistics such as these, it’s no surprise that Milton Keynes has helped SEMLEP achieve another top 10 ranking out of 39 local enterprise partnerships for Foreign Direct Investment successes.

“At InvestMK we play a vital role in attracting and retaining companies from abroad, as well as the domestic market, providing crucial information on locations, demographics and other associated factors which decide whether a company will say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to coming to Milton Keynes.”

A separate report by accountants UHY Hacker Young, placed Milton Keynes third in the UK’s Top 150 towns and cities for business generation, second only to London and Slough. With the creation of 10.5 additional new businesses per 10,000 population, Milton Keynes was named recently by the Office of National Statistics as the banking job hot spot. Cheaper property prices and the city’s close proximity to London make it popular with businesses looking to relocate their offices.

At Business Environment’s Milton Keynes business centre we’ve seen a surge in demand for serviced office space as businesses regain confidence, taking the Avebury Boulevard building to its highest ever occupancy rate (94%). Seven of our clients are international businesses or businesses with a global presence in addition to an international company who has a virtual office in Milton Keynes through our sister company Velocity Virtual.
