Mobile operator O2 praised for energy-efficient office space

Mobile phone and broadband provider O2 has recently been recognised by the Carbon Trust for its work to slash energy consumption in its office space and its data centres.

The company has cut its CO2 emissions dramatically in recent years, and the Trust has praised measures, which have been the amount drop 18 per cent in a year.

Chief executive officer Roman Dunne said much of the work had taken place in the company’s data centres.

He added: “Data centre energy consumption is a significant factor for businesses like ours because actually, the amount of traffic that we are carrying on our network. Investing in things like the smart meters has helped us, and we’ve done that in our retail estate as well as on our network. Over 90 per cent of our carbon footprint comes from electricity consumption, so that’s where our focus is.”

O2 was the first mobile operator to be awarded certification by the Carbon Trust. It originally gained the accolade last January, and the certificate was renewed in February this year.
