Mobile working could cut absenteeism

Mobile working could be the ideal solution to the growing problem of workplace absenteeism, it has been claimed.

According to Katja Hall, director of employment policy at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), employee absences cost the UK economy an estimated £17 billion a year.

Ms Hall claimed that the most significant cost of employee absences is lack of productivity, followed by the costs associated with sick pay.

She added that there are a number of ways to tackle staff absences and implementing a mobile working policy is a great place to start.

Virtual offices can give people the opportunity to work from home or on a part-time basis when they aren’t feeling 100 per cent.

Speaking to HR magazine, Aaron McCormack, chief executive officer of BT Conferencing, said: “This has a knock on effect of making employees more productive as they feel more engaged and supported by the business.”

Recently, The Work Foundation claimed stress, a major cause of workplace absence, can be tackled by managers by creating a positive vibe in serviced offices.
