A leading ecommerce company has announced plans to open a new office in the centre of London.

Amazon will construct a new digital media development centre in the capital, from which it will work on key global projects.

The office is to be based in Glasshouse Yard, as the company looks to tap into London”s high profile, expertise and location.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has been among those to welcome the decision.

“I am thrilled to welcome Amazon”s fantastic new international digital centre to London,” he said.

“For this wildly successful and dynamic company to choose our city to site such an important facility is a splendid feather in our cap.”

Mr Johnson said that London has the talent, space and infrastructure to make the most of the digital economy.

He said this will be his prime message during the Olympic Games, as part of plans to woo even more companies to London.

“Amazon’s investment propels us well up the league table of global tech cities and we thank them for their vote of confidence,” Mr Johnson added.

Paula Byrne, managing director of the Amazon centre in London, commented that London is “a hotbed of tech talent”.

“Testament to that fact is Amazon choosing the capital as the location for the new global Digital Media Development Centre,” she stated.

“Innovation is part of the Amazon DNA and we are creating a British centre of excellence to design and develop the next generation of TV and film services for a wide range of digital devices.”
