The Recruitment Society: A holiday should be a holiday.

ServicedofficeBENews800720421

Holidays should not be a time when staff are still connected to their Blackberry or work emails and simply mobile working, according the Recruitment Society.

There is much talk of increasing holiday entitlement to improve staff morale during this time of pay freezes and low motivation.

The Recruitment Society has suggested that staff would be happy with the entitlement they have if it was actually time off and they weren’t expected to keep abreast with work.

A recent survey by multi-sector recruiter hyphen found that one in three people would sacrifice pay for more holiday so it’s important to allow staff to make the most of the time off they do have off.

It is up to the employer to ensure this happens and employees don’t think they are required to use their holiday to catch up on work.

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said: “Holidays should be strictly that, and I think it is probably wise for employers to make sure that employees can make the best of their holiday by saying, ‘we don’t want to hear from you, we don’t want you to log into your company email account.’”
