Will future office spaces even have desktop PCs?

Will the office spaces of the future have desktop PCs? This is the question posed by IT analyst Rob Bamforth.

According to the workplace technology expert, the rise of smartphone technology is not only doing away with traditional office space workstations, but it is rapidly changing the working landscape.

Mr Bamforth, who works for IT analyst Quocirca, told IT-Director.com that for people with allocated desks – or those who work in offices that use a hot desking policy – the laptop has already taken precedence over traditional desktop PCs.

“The desktop replacement laptop might still be a large and cumbersome beast for many, but it is portable, allowing employees to use it at home or while travelling,” Mr Bamforth claimed.

However, he claimed that the ‘access anywhere attitude’ means that laptops are likely to pass the baton onto tablets and smartphones in the near future.

Recently, Lexmark claimed that many office workers are embarrassed by clumsy-looking legacy technology – like fax machines and chunky desktop PCs.
